薔薇石英（Rose Quartz）

　薔薇石英は日本では珍しく、かつて福島県各地のペグマタイトでごく少量産出したのみでした。現在ではすっかり絶産となっていますが時々かつて採集された標本を見かけます。

　Although pegmatites relatively abundant, rose quartz were rarely discovered in Japan. Once, mainly in pegmatite zone of Fukushima prefecture, about 120-150km north from Tokyo, small quantity of rose quartz were collected.

珪乳石（Menilite)

　珪乳石とは実はオパールの一種です。珪藻土の珪酸成分が分離し沈殿して写真のような面白い形になったものです。　
　これがオパールであるとは電子顕微鏡で調べない限り分かりません。
産地では子ぶり石、仏石、菩薩石等の名で呼ばれますが、確かに妊娠した女性の姿や仏像、動物等を喚起させられる形があります。
　七福神の揃いのセットまで集めたものがあるそうです。
　メニライトとは初耳でしたが、調べてみるとパリの下町、ペール・ラシェーズ墓地に近いメニール・モンタンに因む呼称と分かりました。
　ただしフランス語でメニライトは珪石や火打石を意味します。
確かにパリ盆地周辺の公園などの砂利は殆どが玉髄や珪石の破片からなっています。
　写真左上の珠洲産珪乳石の破断面内部はやはり濃い灰色の珪石です。

　Menilite's name derives from Ménilmontant, 20th district, Paris. In Paris Basin, frint and chalcedonies are found abundant as gravels in the parks. It is practically a kind of opal, which silicate derives from diatomaceous soil.
　In Japan, strange shapes of menilite are well appreciated to have been called as names such as ; Buddha statues stone, pregnant lady stone, etc. etc.

カクタス水晶（Cactus Quartz）

　南アフリカのカクタス水晶は紫水晶が有名ですが、このような褐色の種類もあります。
　一見黄水晶のように見えますが、しかしこの色は恐らく酸化鉄の薄膜が表面を覆っているものです。
　薄膜は光学的な厚さのために光の干渉でシャボン玉のような虹色の反射が無数の水晶の結晶面に見られます。

　So called "Cuctus quartz" (quartz crystal covered with numerous smaller quartz crystals) is discovered in Magaliesberg Mtns. of South Africa. Miost of cuctus quartz is amethyst, but sometimes brownish yellow variations appears in the market. Although they look like citrine for the color, actually the color is of thin film of some iron-oxide material. The film is so thin to cause iridescence.

雨塚山の紫水晶（Amethyst from Amezukayama）

　日本では紫水晶は主に各地の金属鉱山から産出しましたが量は少なく宝石質の結晶は稀でした。
　日本産の最も美しいとされる紫水晶は宮城県白石市の雨塚山産です。
鉄鉱石鉱山の安山岩中に脈をなして産出し、最大で長さ12㎝、径4㎝の透明な結晶が採れ、印鑑などの工芸品にも加工されました。
　写真の結晶とカット石は小さなものですが、今や絶産となった雨塚山産の紫水晶の品質を偲ばせる貴重な標本です。
　For more than 30 years ago, when mines were actively operated throughout Japan, amethyst has been recovered mainly from metal mines as by-product of cupper and zinc ores, but most of them were rarely gem quality. Amezukayama produced exceptional transparent crystals, up to 12cm long and 4cm diameter in the andesine veines of iron ore and were carved for traditinal artisanal products. Although small and not of the best quality,crystals and faceted amethyst are valuable examples of this locality, now exhausted.
