多彩な色合いのカボション（Colorfull cabochons) 0.58 - 41.55ct

　 　不透明ながら美しい色合いや模様を持つ石はカボションカットされます。
一般にカボションカットされる宝石は大量に採れるものが多く、したがって価格も安いために
宝石とは呼ばず、準貴石等とあたかも一段と価値が低いものかのように呼ばれることがあります。
　しかし宝石、貴石、準貴石等という妙な格付けには何の根拠もありません。
野の花のように、ありふれていようと、安価であろうと、美しい石は全て宝石なのです。

　Translucent to opaque stones with attractive colors and patterns are often polished to cabochon cut. In general such stones are available abundant and are sometimes called not gemstone, but semi-precious stone as if they are classified as less valuable stones.
However, a strange classification such as ; gemstone, precious stone and semi-precious stone is nothing but ridiculous. Like pretty wild floweres, so-called precious stones should be called gemstone, whatever their cost and abundance.

リコライト（Ricolite）

		購入したラベルにはメキシコ産の Licolite とありましたが、後に正しくは Ricolite と訂正がありました。 　したがって正しい産地もアメリカ、ニューメキシコ州、リコ地方、Ash Creek 特産のリコライトと判明しました。 　蛇紋岩に石灰岩ではなく滑石が層状に入ったものと判明。 動物などを彫刻した装飾品に使われているようです。 　First, this stone was labeled as Licolite from Mexico, but lator, it was corrected tobe Ricolite. Then I could trace the correct locality as Ricolite from Ash Creek, Rico Area, New Mexico, U.S.A. The stone itself is fine grained serpentine interbanded with talc. Ricolite is mainly carved for small ornamental statues.

デュモルチエ石を包有する水晶（Dumortierite in Quartz）

		デュモルチエ石　：　Al7O3BO3(SiO4)3 は多様な成因を持つ鉱物です。 基本的にはアルミニウムに富む変成岩中起源の鉱物ですが、ミグマタイトや片麻岩、花崗岩やペグマタイト等、火成起源、更に変成岩中に熱水作用で出来る。 　色は紫、ピンク、青、緑、、褐色、無色と多彩です。 単独の鉱物標本として見かけることは稀で、針状や放射状の結晶の集合体で産することが多いとありますから、一見してデュモルチエ石と識別するのは簡単ではありません。 　滅多に出会わない鉱物ですが、今回は稀にカボションに加工されたものを見かけて入手した次第。 　アメリカ・ネヴァダ州のロチェスターではスパーク・プラグの絶縁体用のセラミック原料として採掘されています。 　Dumortierite : Origin and occurence is metamorphic in some Al-rich metamorphic rocks, e.g. in migmatites and gneisses　; magmatic in granites and pegmatites　; hydrothermal in altered rocks. It is rarely found as prysmatic crystals ; usually in columnar or fibrous masses. Variety of colors ; colorless to violet, blue, green, pink, brown. 　Dumortierite as blue colored inclusion in quartz is fashioned as cabochon. In Rochester, Nevada, U.S.A., dumortierite has been mined for use in the manufacture of porcelain for spark plugs.

微斜長石　：アマゾナイト (Microcline, variation : Amazonite）

		アマゾナイトは一般には不透明な結晶として産出します。 が近年、この１０年ほどですが、アメリカ・コロラド州やブラジル、エチオピア産等、透明度の高い結晶を時折り見かけるようになりました。 　このカボションも、色こそ淡いものの、光にかざすと透けて見えます。 　Amozonite is in general discovered as opaque crystal. But recently, since these 10 years, translucent crystals are seen from Colorado, U.S.A. Brazil and Ethiopia. This translucent cabochon is from Bahia, Brazil and has glassy luster.

燐灰石キャッツアイ（Apatite Cat's eye）

			ブラジルはアウインやパライバのトルマリンを偲ばせる美しい燐灰石を産します。 　結晶には多くの亀裂があるために宝石質の部分は小さく１カラットを越えるルースは稀にしか採れません。 　このカボションはキャッツ・アイ効果を示します。 一般に燐灰石のキャッツ・アイは不透明なものが大半ですが、このカボションは透明度が高く小さいながら大変美しいものです。 　A fairy blue apatite, like haüyn or paraiba-troumaline is produced from Brazil. Regrettably, faceted stone over one carat is rare, due to cracks and fissures in crystals. This cabochon shows cat's eye effect and is exceptionally transparent, unlike normal translucent to opaque apatite cat's eye stone.

　　　　　　　　　　　メキシコの瑪瑙（Agates from Mexico）

				メキシコは多彩な瑪瑙の産地として知られますが、ここではファイアーアゲートとコヤミト・アゲートを紹介します。 　このファイアー・アゲートは余り上等なものではありませんがしかし、視角により七色の虹が煌きます。 　コミヤトはアメリカのエルパソとメキシコのチワワの中間にある息を呑むほどに多彩な色と模様の瑪瑙の産地。 　このカボションは確かに縞模様の有る瑪瑙ですが、石の大部分は透明度の高い淡い紫のオパール質です。 　Mexico is abundant for varieties of agates. This fire agate is not the best quality one but shows pretty iridescence. Comiyato is a world famous quality agate locality in between El Paso, U.S.A. and Chihuahua, Mexico. This cabochon is a sardonyx with mauve colored transparent opal.

ストロベリー・クォーツ (Strawberry Quartz)

			肉眼では見えませんが赤鉄鉱の薄片を含む赤い石英は宝石名はストロベリ−・クォーツと呼ばれます。 　酸化鉄による発色の玉髄とは少し色合いが異なり、有機物の色素で発色する赤い珊瑚のような色合いです。 　ロシアのダルネゴルスクでは赤鉄鉱に因るコレクター垂涎の見事な赤い水晶の見事な群晶を産します。 　Red quartz colored by microscopic hematite inclusion is called "strawberry quartz" as gemstone. The color is different from chalcedony, colored by oxide iron, but resembles coral, colored by organic pigment. Dal'negorsk, Russia is renowned for red quartz clusters, highly appreciated from collectors.

ピンク・オパール（Pink Opal）

		近年トルコ石のような空色と共に珊瑚のようなピンクのペルー産のオパールを良く見かけます。 　空色は銅、ピンクはマンガンによる発色です。 パステル・カラーのピンクの宝石は珊瑚と、極めて高価なコンク・パールがありますが、ペルー産のピンクのオパールはマンガン鉱山から安定した供給があるために極めて手頃な価格です。 　Recently, pastel color opal, turquois-like sky blue and coral-like pink opals from Peru are relatively abundant in the market. Blue is colored by copper and pink is by mangane. Both pink coral is becoming scarece and pink conch pearl is extremely expensive, while pink opal is available at reasonable price thanks to stable supply from manganese mines of Peru.

トルコの翡翠（Jade in Quartz from Turkey）

		トルコで翡翠が採れるとは寡聞にして初耳でしたが、これはどう見ても軟玉ではなく翡翠輝石に見えます。 　調べてみるとヨーロッパではコルシカ島とギリシアで翡翠輝石を産します。 翡翠産地に共通の藍閃石を含む高圧ー低温変成帯がトルコを東西に貫いていますから、翡翠が採れても不思議はありません。 　この紫の発色は三価の鉄イオンによるもののようです。 　There are not written text about jade production from Turkey, as far as I knew. But this cabochon is certainly jadeite jade and not nephrite jade. There are literature that Corsica Island and Greek is known as jadeite jade producer in Europe. The geographic map shows that the glaucophane metamorphic belt runs from East to West across Turkey. Since jadeite jade is discovered always with glaucopahne only in the high pressure and low temperature metamorphic zone, it is not strange that jadeite jade is recovered from Turkey. The lavendor color seems to derive from Fe3+ impurity.
