合成と天然のクリスタル・オパール　2.35, 4.98, 2.51ct Synthetic and Natural Crystal Opals

　美しい遊色を示すオパールではありますが、私がオパールにはほぼ無関心だったのは、それが不透明で非晶質の宝石との偏見のためだったかもしれません。
　その無関心を一変させられたのは圧倒的な美しさを見せるオレゴン産のハイドロフェーン・オパールに出会ったからに他なりません。
　ハイドロフェーンではありませんが透明な中に遊色が煌くクリスタル・オパールは僅かですが他の産地にも稀に見られます。
　とは言え、オーストラリア産の高級品にはとても手が届きません。
もっぱらメキシコ産の手頃なクリスタル・オパールがコレクションの対象でした。
　新たにギルソンの合成品とパキスタンの天然のクリスタル・オパールとが加わりました。

　Whatever they might show pretty ply-of-color, opal had long been out of my interest, probably because opal is an amorphous opaque gemstone. Translucent Oregon hydrophane opal totally changed my prejudice, and I started the collection of Mexican crystal opals, which are far affordable than Australian ones. Now crystal opals from Gilson synthetics and unusual locality of Pakistan jointed to my collection.

パキスタンのオパール（Opal from Pakistan）

　パキスタンで宝石質のオパールが採れるとは如何なる資料にも載ってはいません。
近年シガール渓谷から僅かな量が採掘されたのはクリスタル・オパールですが遊色は全く見せない、いわゆるコモン・オパールでしかありません。
　しかし冴え渡るカット技術により、惚れ惚れするような石に仕上がっています。

　No literature reports about gem opal production from Pakistan. Recently, a limited quantity of crystal opal from Shigar Valley appeared into the market. Though it is only a so-called common opal without play-of-color, outstanding cutting skill reveales the hidden beauty of the material.

ロール・トップ・カットされたギルソンの合成オパール(Gilson Synthetic Opals in Roll Top cut)

　1994年のアメリカ・アリゾナ州のツーソン・ショーにファセット・カットされたギルソンの合成クリスタル・オパールが出品された記事と写真とを見て以来探し続けてようやく入手したのが写真のオパールです。
　恐らく1990年代半ばと思われますがギルソン氏の引退後は合成宝石事業は一代で途絶えてしまい、何処を探してもクリスタル・オパールを見かけることはありませんでした。
　したがって、あれはごく僅かな実験的に造られたサンプルであったのかと半ば諦めていました。
　最近ギルソンに関する情報をネットで探していたところ、思いもかけずアメリカのテキサス州オースチンにある会社がギルソン製のクリスタル・オパールのラフと研磨品を扱っていました。
　かなりの量と多彩な種類のギルソン製の合成オパールの在庫が残されているようです。
ギルソンの合成品はメキシコやオーストラリア産の最上級のクリスタル・オパールに匹敵する美しさです。
　にも拘らずカラット当たり8ドルとプラスチックの紛い物並みの値段には驚かされました。
全く同じ大きさとカットのルースがその後偶然見つけた他のサイトでは１個 124 ドルとカラット当たり 50 ドルです。　それでもごく妥当な値段と思います。
　買う身になれば安い方が嬉しいのですが、それにしても何故そんなに安売りするのか腑に落ちません。
　京セラも近年、同じタイプのクリスタル・オパールを開発して販売していますが、カボションの宝飾品のみで、この大きさのファセット・カットしたルースはありません。

　I have long been looking for Gilson crystal opal, in vain, which appeared in 1994 Tucson Show reports. Because death of Mr. Gilson, probably in mid 1990's and his gem synthesis business ceased, I have almost gave up to obtain this stone. However, looking for Gilson's information through internet, I encountered an enterprise in Austin, Texas still handles considerable volume and varieties of Gilson opal rough and finished gems and I could finally obtain the very stone I have been seeking for. I wonder why they sell faceted stones for a price as low as US$8 per carat, while another sight sells at US$50, which seems to be quite reasonable, compared with the natural stones from Mexico and Australia.
Kyocera has succeeded to create the similar crystal opal and commercialize only as finished jewelry and not as loose stone.
