メキシコの紫水晶（Mexican amethyst）

　世界には無数の紫水晶の産地があります。
中でもメキシコは世界で最も美しい結晶の産地として知られています。
　主な産地は大西洋岸のベラクルス州のラス・ビガスと、太平洋岸のリゾート地、アカプルコの北凡そ100km のゲレロ州の南マードレ山脈のアマチトランの周囲100km四方一帯の鉱山群から産する紫水晶です。
　ラス･ビガスの紫水晶は世界屈指の高い透明度を持つ美しい結晶ですが色が淡く、カットには向きません。
一方ゲレロ州の濃い色の紫水晶は宝石としてカットされ,最上のものは夜の光に赤い炎が煌く伝説のウラル産に匹敵すると評価されます。

　Among world's amethyst localities, Mexico is of great renown as the superb crystal producer. There are two major amethyst localities : One is Las Vigas, in Vera Cruz on Atlantic Ocean side and the other is on the Pacific Ocean side, in Amatitlann area, about 100km north from Acapulco, in the remote mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur of north-central Guerrero State. Las Vigas amethyst crystal is famous for its superb transparency, but color is lost when faceted to small loose. The best Guerrero amethyst is often praised equivalent as legendary Ural amethyst with red fire sparkling when lit under incandescent light.

　白熱光下で赤い煌きを見せる 12.58 カラットのルースは典型的なゲレロ産の紫水晶です。
ごく普通の宝石に過ぎない紫水晶の価値は透明度と色の濃淡とが決めてとなり、産地が云々されることはありません。
　したがって産地が特定できる結晶を入手して自分でカットでもしない限り、名高いゲレロ産の紫水晶のルースを見ることは不可能です。
　出所が確かなF・ポー博士のコレクションからの放出品なので、ようやくにしてアマチトランの紫水晶に出会うことが出来ました。

　A faceted 12.58ct stone with red fire flash under incandescent light, is a typical Guerrero amethyst. Amethyst is priced only by color and transparency, and locality is ignored in gem trade. Then, there is no way to obtain amethyst loose of certain locality. This stone is a rare case, that enables us to trace the origine, thanks to authentic Dr. F. Pough's collection.

アマチトラン一帯の地質と紫水晶の成因 （Geology and occurence of amethyst in Amtitlan area）

　ゲレロ州のアマチトラン周辺の100km四方に広がる一帯は後期白亜紀の石灰岩と頁岩から成る層に覆われています。
　新生代第三紀末に起こった花崗閃緑岩の貫入による接触交代作用に起因する、金と鉄鉱石のスカルン鉱床に伴って紫水晶の鉱脈が形成され、無数の鉱脈が存在します。

　Guerrero amethyst occurs in veins and pods related to Gold-Iron Skarn deposits that comprise what has come to be known as the "Guerrero Gold Belt". These contact metasomatic skarns occur in Lower Cretaceous dolomitic limestones and calcareous shales, where they are intruded by Lower Tertiary granodiorite stocks.

マダガスカルの水晶（Malagasy quartzs）

　これらはいずれもスリランカ産とのことでした。いずれもカラット当たり10円にもならないガラス並の安値で
まとまった数量がネット市場に安定して出ています。　確認のために試しに入手しました。
　実物と屈折率からガラスではなく確かに本物の水晶でした。
全く包有物が無いので天然と合成との区別は出来ません。
平凡なカットのありふれた水晶ではありますが、大きいと流石に迫力があります。
煙水晶も味わいの深い色合いです。
　外見と比重等から水晶ルースの産地を特定するのはほぼ不可能です。
これらの宝石質の大きな水晶がスリランカ産である可能性は無いとは言えません。
　が、産状や値段を考慮すれば、現在これだけの大きさの透明な水晶を安定して供給できるのはブラジルかマダガスカルのみです。　
　アフリカ産の宝石のほぼ全て、またブラジル産の宝石の多くも、現在はタイとスリランカでカットされています。
　一部の高品質の結晶は日本、アメリカやヨーロッパにてカットされます。
　市場のシトリンの大半が紫水晶を加熱処理したものですが、最近マダガスカル中部に大きな黄水晶の鉱床が発見され、加熱処理されたものとはやや色合いの異なるルースが流通し始めています。
　17.1カラットのシトリンは色合いから判断すると、新発見のマダガスカル産と思われます。
恐らく他の二つの水晶もマダガスカル産でしょう。

   These three quartzs were sold through net market as low as US$0.10 per carat as Srilankan origine. I bought them just to verify if they might be genuine quartz or something fakes. Actually, they are found as genuine quartz. It is difficult to identify if they were natural or synthetic, because none of them have any inclusions. There are no means to identify exact localities from faceted quarts neither. Considering relatively abundant volume at extremely low prices in the trade, they migh be from Madagascar or Brazil, rather than Srilanka. Today, almost all African stones and many Brazilian stones are cut in Thailand and Srilanka, except superb gem quality stones cut in Japan, U.S.A. and in Europe.
Most citrines in the market are heat treated amethyst. But quite recently, large natural citrine-smoky quartz deposits were discovered in central Madagascar and faceted stones begin to appear in the market. 17.1 carat citine on the photo certinaly is that natural citrine for its color.
