December 2009 ：　タンザニアのジルコン　(Tanzanian Zircons)

　 タンザニアでは1980年代からウンバ川流域で宝石質のジルコンが知られていました。
が、大半は褐色味が強く、とても魅力ある宝石ではありませんでした。
　ところが最近、全く褐色味がなく、透明度の高い赤紫色のジルコンを市場で見かけます。詳細は不明ですが、どうやら新しい産地が発見された様です。

　In Tanzania, zircon have been reported since 1980's from Umba Valley. ut most of them are not attractive dark brownish color as gemstone.
However, since mid 2009, quite transparent purplish red zircons, without brownish hue, appeared in the gem market. Although there are no detailed informations, new locality of attractive zircon was discovered, recently.

　最初の二つは紫のトルマリンかガーネットのような色合いです。
よくよく観察するとパビリオン部の稜線が強い副屈折で二重に見えるためにジルコンと分かります。
　念のために屈折率を計るとそれぞれ1.930と1.910と明らかにハイ･ジルコンの値が得られました。
いずれもメタミクト化が進んでいない、内部に包有物や亀裂もない極めて透明度の高いジルコンです。　
　宝石としては殆ど存在感の希薄なジルコンでしたが、これだけ美しい石が出てくるとなると再び注目されても不思議ではありません。
　右の152カラットの石はやはりタンザニアで今年新た　な産地から採れた記録的な大きさと美しさのジルコンです。
　こちらはややオレンジ味を帯びた赤い色ですが、恐らく前の二つと同じ産地ではないかと思われます。

　First two zircons look like tourmaline or garnet for their purplish-red color. However, careful observation reveales that they are zircons, for their strong birefringence seen on pabillion line. Refractive Indexes of 1.930 and 1.874 tells that they are typical non-metamictized high-type zircon. They are quite transparent without inclusions nor internal fissures. If production of these fine stones continues, zircon will certainly survive into gem trade again.
　A huge 152 carat red zircon with on the right was newly recovered from Tanzania, this year. These three zircons might have come from the same new locality.
