世界各地の蛍石(Faceted fluorites from various localities)　0.53−104.28ct

　 　その美しさが再認識されて、蛍石の人気は近年高まる一方です。
それはそれで嬉しいことには違いありませんが、以前なら気軽に買えたものが、最近ではちょっとした標本でもためらってしまう程の高値を呼ぶようになってしまいました。
　幸いなことに、カットされた蛍石は一部のコレクターのみが注目するのみなので、値段も普通はカラット当たり2ドルから7ドル程度と気軽に買える水準です。
　今回、古典的な産地や珍しい産地などまとめて取り揃えて入手しました。

　It is pleasant that fluorite's beauty has been well acknowledged, recently. On the other hand, specimen prices are rising at puzzling speed.
Fortunately, faceted fluorites are limited collectors item yet, and prices are generally quite reasonable (I would say extremely low, compared with sky-rocketting crystal specimen's prices) level between US$2 to 7 per carat. Thanks to the affordable prices, new faceted fluorites from various localities are now steadily increasing in my collection.

　アメリカ、ニュー・ハンプシャー州、ウェストモーランドのワイズ鉱山産蛍石は爽やかな緑色の八面体の美しい結晶の産地として知られています。
　この鉱山産の宝石質の結晶を入手したのは20年以上昔のことです。
結晶と同じ産地のカットした石とを集めるのが理想ですが、なかなかその機会に恵まれません。
　今回ようやくにして、結晶に相応しいカット石に巡り会いました。
104カラットの石は異例の深いパビリオンを持ち，そのために深い緑の色合いを見せます。

　Fluorite of Wise Mine, Westmoreland, New Hampshire is renowned for transparent green octahedron crystal. It is my desire to collect both crystal specimen and faceted sample of same locality but there are few opportunities. After 20 years of patience since I obtained pretty crystal of Wise Mine, I finally encountered superb faceted stones. 104ct faceted stone shows favorable saturated color thanks to unusually deep pavillion.

ナミビアの蛍石（Namibian fluorite）

　 前述のワイズ鉱山産と大変良く似た色合いのナミビア産の蛍石が、ほぼ同じ時期に出現しました。
蛍石の発色の原理は微量のランタノイド系の希土類元素によるものです。
　緑色は二価のサマリオウム・イオンによるカラーセンターです。
したがって世界各地の蛍石がいずれも良く似た色合いになっても不思議ではありませんが、別々の産地からそっくりの色合いの蛍石が同時に現れるとは面白いものです。

　Green fluorite from Namibia, similar hue as before-mentioned one from Wise Mine, appeared in the market at the same time. It is not strange that there is a great resemblance of fluorites from various localities, because the coloring mechanism of fluorite is due to impurity of lantanoid series rare earth elements ; green fluorite is commonly colored by Sm²⁺ color center.

メキシコの蛍石（Mexican fluorite）

　メキシコ産のやや青みを帯びていますが緑色の大きな蛍石のルースを同時に入手しました。何処の鉱山かは不明ですが（色合いと品質とから恐らくチワワ州のナイカ鉱山）、見事なカット技術と相まって高い透明度の美しいルースです。

　A large highly transparent facetted stone of 58ct is from Mexico. Although exact locality is not certain(probably Naika Mine, Chihuahua, estimating from it's color and quality) and hue is slightly pale, excellent facetting skil makes this stone quite attractive.

コロンビアの蛍石（Colombian fluorites）

　 コロンビアのエメラルド鉱山、とりわけコスケス地区の鉱山ではエメラルドが蛍石を伴って産出することは資料には書かれています。
　エメラルドは炭酸カルシウムの方解石の脈中に結晶しますから、ベリリウムを運んだ熱水中に普通に含まれる弗素と方解石の脈石とが反応して蛍石として結晶することは大いにあり得ることです。
　ところがコロンビア産の蛍石を実物はおろか、本や資料でさえもかつて一度も見たことがなく、一体どんな蛍石なのかとかねがね思っていました。
　今回思いがけず、小さいながらルースを入手しました。
エメラルドを髣髴させる緑色の透明な蛍石には思わず喝采です。この緑もサマリウム・イオンによる発色です。

　Emerald mine of Colombia is known to produce fluorite, particulary in mines of Cosquez area. It is not strange that hydrothermal liquids reacts with calcite vein to form fluorite. However, I have never seen actual Colombian fluorite crystals nor even photographs in any literatures in the past and have been wondering what kind of fluorite they are. I happned to obtain faceted colombian fluorites, which resemble Colombian emeralds, with pleasant surprise. This color is, as well as other green fluorites, due to traces of Sm²⁺ color center.

　ニューヨークの蛍石（Fluorite from Penfield, New York）

　ニューヨーク、マンハッタン島北部のKings Bridge辺りにはかつては採石場があって見事なウヴァイトや透輝石、金紅石の結晶などを採集できたものでした。
　ペンフィールドもそのうちの一つかと、必死でニューヨークの市街地図を探したのですが、結局ペンフィールドは遥か300kmも北西、オンタリオ湖に面したニューヨーク州ロチェスター市の郊外の町でした。
　この淡青色のルースには正体不明の残留物が詰まった3本の長い亀裂が入っていて余り美しくはありませんが、ともあれ珍しい産地の貴重な標本ではあります。

　This faceted stone is from New York, but not in the Manhattan Islands, but a town of Penfield is in the suburb of Rochester City, New York State, far, over 300km north west from New York City. This faceted pale blue stone has three blade-like cleavage canals partially filled with unknown, white, epigenetic residue.

イリノイ州の蛍石（Fluorites from Cave-in-Rock, Illinois)

　次の二つはその名も高いイリノイ州ケイヴ・イン・ロックの蛍石です。黄色の蛍石は決して珍しいとは言えませんが、しかしファセット・カットできるほどの透明なものは稀です。27.51カラットの石は少しインクルージョンがありますが何といもいえない温かみのある美しい色合いです。もう一つはやや淡い金色の素晴らしい透明度と、いずれも魅力的な蛍石。こういう石たちがコレクションに加わると嬉しくなります。

　Next two faceted stones are both from famous Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. First stone is slightly included to show hazy appearance but what an attractive worm golden color, this stone has ! Another one is superbly transparent golden stone. What a pleasure that such stones join to the collection !

アフガニスタンの蛍石（Fluorite from Afghanistan)

　四番目はまるでインディゴライトを偲ばせる深い色合いの蛍石です。
前述のコロンビアの蛍石同様に、アフガニスタンの蛍石は同じ産地のインディゴライトとそっくりの色合いというのが不思議です。
　蛍石としては余り見かけない色合いです。
実は他の蛍石とは桁違いに高い、とはいってもカラット当たり20ドルですから、同じ色と品質のインディゴライトと比べれば20分の1にしか過ぎません。

　Deep strange blue stone is from Afghanistan. It is strange that this stone resembles indigolite from same locality as in case of Colombian fluorite which resembles emerald. This Afghan fluorite is US$20 per carat, far expensive than other fluorites of new aquisition, but yet costs only 1/20th compared with Afghan Indigolite of same color and quality.

産地不明の蛍石（Fluorite of unknow locality）

　70.5カラットのかすかに緑を帯びた蛍石の産地は不明です。
この石を研磨したのは蛍石のカットの第一人者のアート・グラントではありません。
　しかしながら、彼に匹敵する素晴らしい技術の持ち主です。複雑なカット面が完璧に仕上げられています。

　This faint green, triangle faceted stone is from unknown locality and is not cut by Mr. Art Grant. However, perfectly finished complicated faces tells the remarkable skill of the cutter.

パキスタンの蛍石（Fluorite from Pakistan）

　淡い緑色の石はパキスタン産です。完全に透明な28カラットのルースが取れるようなパキスタン産の結晶標本たるや今や天文学的な値段になっていますが、一方でこのルースはカラット当たり4ドルと全く妥当な水準です。結晶形が完全でなくとも透明な部分さえ十分な大きさがあればカットは可能ですから、必ずしも同じ次元での比較は出来ませんが、しかしコレクターとしてみれば、他の宝石では望めないような大きく美しいルースがきわめて妥当な価格で手に入る蛍石はこの上なく貴重な鉱物です。

　This pale green 27.88ct stone is from Pakistan. Although it is not the comparison in the same level, but faceted fluorite is reasonably priced to encourage faceted stone collector, while beatiful fluorite crystal or matrix prices have recently been raised to unaffordable level.

ブラジルの蛍石(Brazilian fluorie)

　ブラジルの無数の宝石ペグマタイトから宝石質の蛍石が採れても何の不思議はありません。
しかし宝石質の大きな、しかも無色の蛍石の結晶標本を見た記憶は何故か殆どありません。
　したがってこの81.5カラットもの無色透明、インクルージョンも亀裂もない完全無欠のルースには驚かされました。
　カラット当たり2ドルという嬉しい値段も驚きに花を添えてくれます。

　Despite the world's richest gem pegmatite are, Brazil is relatively poor in fluorites. I have no memories of having seen gemmy colorless Brazilian fluorite crystals nor matrix. Therefor, this 81.5ct colorless, perfectly faceted stone without inclusion was a great surprise. I could hardly believe a price of US$2.00 per carat for such a rare stone.
