　 スミソニアンやヒューストン、ロンドン等の世界的な自然史博物館を訪れる楽しみの一つは、展示されている息を呑むようなミュージアム・ピース（稀なる逸品）の数々を見ることにあります。
　世界的な大博物館とは言え、それらの逸品を自力で入手したわけではなく、ほぼ全てが大富豪やコレクターの遺産、企業の寄付等の永年の集積の結果に他なりません。
　個人のささやかなコレクションに博物館級の逸品を入手することなど、夢のまた夢ではあります。が、永年続けていれば思わぬ機会に遭遇することもあります。
　今回はそんな稀なる出会いで得たルースを紹介します。

　A great pleasure and exitement to visit Natural History Museums at Washington, New York, Houston, Los Angeles, London, Prais, etc., is certainly to see so-called museum pieces of mineral crystals and faceted gemstones. Most of their collections were built during centuries of accumlations thanks to donations from collectors.
Although personal collections can not afford to compete with that of world museums, yet there are opportunities to encounter rare museum pieces. Here shows a good example of the remarkable stones I obtained, recently.

　 緑簾石（エピドート）族の鉱物は一般に濃緑褐色の色合いと多くの包有物により透明度が低く宝石としてカットされることはまずありません。
　ほぼ唯一の例外として、ヴァナジウムを含み、サファイアのような深い青紫で高い透明度を持つ灰簾石の変種であるタンザナイトがあります。
　が、美しいルースの大半は褐色の石を加熱処理で青紫に発色させたものです。
　灰簾石は緑簾石から鉄分を少なくした変種と言える鉱物です。
そのため暗い色が多い緑簾石族の中では透明度が高いのが特徴です。
　アルプス型の熱水鉱床やスカルン型の変成鉱床に稀に産しますが、鉱物標本すら見る機会は殆どありません。
　したがってカットされた宝石質のルースは恐ろしく稀、偶に出会うのは1カラット未満の無数の包有物入りの標本級でしかありません。
　にも拘らず希少価値から上質のタンザナイト並みの値付けがされていますから全く触手が動きません。
　そんなわけで、私の持つ唯一の灰簾石は写真の灰色のルースです。
かつてブラジルでモルガナイトとして売られていました。
　確かに角度によっては微かに淡いピンクを帯びているように見えますが、そんな色のモルガナイトがある筈はなく、調べてみたら灰簾石と判明した次第です。
　今回入手したルースは3.57カラットと大きく、肉眼では殆ど包有物が見られない高い透明度があります。
さらにスフェーンのような明るく輝かしい色合いです。
　日本の熟練した職人による素晴らしいカットも相まって、灰簾石としては空前絶後の宝石質のルースと言っても過言ではありません。

　Almost all epidote group minerals are rarely faceted as gemstone, due to dark colors and numerous inclusions, except one specy, Tanzanite, a sapphire-like blue to purple color vaiety of zoisite.
Clinozoisite is considered as the epidote variety with lesser iron content, resulting higher transparency among epidote grout minerals.　The origin and occurence of clinozoisite is metamorphic and hydrothermal in contacts of marbles and in the Alpine-type veins. But it is hardly encounter faceted stone, even mineral specimen, neither. A rarely seen faceted stone is generally small size of less one carat with heavy inclusions but priced as high as gem tanzanite because of rarity.
　Only one faceted clinozoisite, I obtained for over 20 years ago in Brasil, was the one, sold as morganite in gray color with faint pink fue !! I bought the stone, in order to verify the genuiness to find it, actually a clinozoisite.
　The newly obtained stone is extremely large and transparent for clinozoisite. The color is bright and brilliant like sphene. The stone faceted by Japanese skilfull cutter deserves the museum piece !

薔薇輝石（Rhodonite）
　

　欧米ではギリシア語で薔薇を意味する ”rhodon : ロードン” に因む二つの鉱物名が日本では対照的な名前となっています　；　マンガンの炭酸塩鉱物の　”rhodochorosite : ロードクロサイト（薔薇色の石〉” が菱面体の結晶形に因んで即物的な菱マンガン鉱と命名された一方で ”rhodonite : ロードナイト（薔薇の石〉” は大層優雅な薔薇輝石です。
　こちらはマンガンとカルシウムの珪酸塩鉱物です。
　いずれもマンガン鉱山に普通に見られる薔薇色の鉱物です。
一般には団塊状で産出しますが、稀に発見される美しい結晶標本はコレクター間で人気沸騰となり、閉山となった鉱山が結晶標本採集のために再開された程。
　美しい菱マンガン鉱の結晶は現在では最も人気の高いものの一つですが、そのため途方も無い値段となってしまっています。
　一方で標本にはならない結晶片をカットしたルースはモース硬度が低く完全な劈開性を持つために衝撃に弱く、宝飾品には使えません。
　限られたコレクター向けの需要に値段も国際的な水準はカラット当たり100ドル程度と妥当なものです。
　
　薔薇輝石は常に細粒状の団塊として産出します。
カット可能な透明な宝石質結晶は例外的にかつてオーストラリアのブロークン・ヒルの亜鉛と鉛の鉱山から産出した2cm程の結晶から最大で10カラットのルースがカットされました。
　現在ではブラジル・ミナス・ジェライスのモロ・ダ・ミーナ鉱山がほぼ唯一の宝石質の結晶を産する鉱山です。が１カラットを越える大きさのルースは滅多には得られません。

　There two beautifully pink colored minerals named after greek work "rhodon", meaning rose : rhodochrosite and rhodonite.
They are commonly recovered world-wide but mostly in granular or massive ore and exceptionaly rare transparent crystals are so highly praised by collectors, once closed mines were reopned only for crystal mining. So far, today fine rhodochrosite crystals are traded with crazy price, while faceted stones, cut from non specimen pieces, available several hundreds of carat every year, are traded only for collectors with reasonable price of US$100 per carat yet. Rhodochrosite is not suitable for jewelery purpose because of it's low Mohs hardness and brittleness, derives from perfect cleavage.

　Rhodonite crystal is found always as granular massive ore. Once mines at Broken Hill, Australia produced exceptional crystals and a few faceted stones wtih maximum weight of 10.5 carat were faceted. Today, Morro da Mina, Conselheiro Lafaiete, Minas Gerais, Brazil is the unique locality to produce gemmy crystal. But faceted stones over one carat are extremly rare.

　 ブラジル･ミナス･ジェライス州のコンセリェイロ・ラファイエテのマンガン鉱山が古くから宝石質の薔薇輝石のほぼ唯一の産地です。
　鮮やかな濃いピンクの結晶を産し透明度が比較的に高い結晶が稀にファセット･カットされました。
しかしその大半を占める１カラット未満の小さなルースでさえ包有物が多く、それ以上の大きさでは透明度が失われて不透明になります。
　にも拘らず希少性からカラット当たり400ドルと極めて高価なものでした。
近年は結晶標本を目的に採掘が行われ、少量ながら宝石質の結晶が市場に流通しています。
　写真の5cmの結晶が7500ドルと卒倒しそうな値段です。
が、この結晶を全部使ったところでせいぜい１カラットのルースが取れるか否かでしょう。

　Morro da Mina mine, Conselheiro Lafaiete, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil has been practcally a unique locality to produce gemmy rhodonite crystal. Although rare and small, vivid pink crystals with relatively high transparency have been faceted. Most of stones are smaller than one carat with inclusions and heavily included opaque larger stones fetched as high as US$400 per carat due to it's extreme rarity. Recently mine has been operated in order to recover crystal specimens for collectors and limited gemmy crystals of 5cm wide as shown on photo feteches US$7500 !! Suppose this crystal might be cut, yield would be a few pieces of faceted stones not exceeding one carat in total.

　 こんな状況下でごく最近、インドの宝石商所有の数個の古い在庫が2，3の業者経由で放出されました。
中でも写真の8.50カラットのルースは最大、最良のルースでした。
　多少の包有物があります。が、薔薇輝石のルースとしては記録的な大きさと高い透明度と美しい色合いの素晴らしいものです。
　過去に入手していた二つの小さなルースと比べると正に桁違いの逸品です。
国際的な相場の十分の一以下と言う値段には嬉しい驚きと言うよりむしろ唖然としました。
　この大きさと品質の薔薇輝石のルースは例えばカシミール･サファイアと並ぶほど稀で貴重な逸品中の逸品なのです。

　Quite recently in Japan, several pieces of large faceted rhodonite were offered through a couple of dealers on internet market. They are from old stock of Indian gem dealer. 8.5 carata stone on photo is the best and largest among them. Although slightly included, it is the record-breaking rhodonite for the saturated color, size and transparency, in comparison with two smaller stones I obtained in past 20 years. I was greatly astonished rather than a pleasant surprise for the offer price, which is less than one 10th of international price level for faceted rhodonite. Faceted rhodonite of this size and quality is the rarest and the most valuable, comparable to any rare gemstones, such as Kashmir sapphire.
