　インターネットで合成オパールを検索していたところ、"シンセ･オパール”なる装飾品のオークションのサイトが出てきました。
　扱っている商品が虎目石の数珠やら開運水晶等々胡散臭い品物ばかり。
その上商品説明で合成なのに天然のオパール云々・・とあります。　
　オレゴン産や近年パキスタンのシガール渓谷でごく少量が採掘されたハイドロフェーン･オパールを思わせるなかなかきれいなものですが、しかし1000円前後の値段となると、プラスチックの紛い物としか思えません。　2ヶ月ほど経って再び見たところ、落札者が無いまま再び出ていました。
　合成と名がつくとどんなに美しかろうとただ同然であろうと、全く売れないのが日本の宝飾品市場の特異なところです。
　恐らくはプラスチックのオーパライトかと当たりをつけましたが、イミテーションにせよ持っていなかったので、3点まとめて最低価格で落札しました。
　ブレスレットとネックレスはそのまま、右は元は紫の房と金色の金具と水晶の珠が付いた数珠でしたが、調べるために外したものです。　水晶と称する透明な珠は思ったとおりプラスチックでした。
　ところが青みを帯びた乳白色の部分はずっしりと重く、到底プラスチックではあり得ません。
すべすべした感触からガラスでもなく、その正体が何なのか全く見当がつきません。
　比重と屈折率とを計ったところどうやらガラスでもプラスチックでもありません。
可能性のある様々な物質と比較したのが下記の表です。　
　こうして並べてみるとどうやら合成オパールらしいのですが、こんなに比重が高いものは前代未聞です。
　精密な分析手段を持たない以上、ルースや宝飾品に決してやってはいけないことですが、最後の手段としてモース硬度を調べてみました。
　石膏（２）から始めて方解石（３）、螢石（４）、燐灰石（５）、長石（６）へと進めましたが引っかき傷が出来ません。　即ち天然、合成のオパールと同等のモース硬度を持つことが判明しました。
　何処で誰によって造られたのか？　やや比重が高すぎる上に、余りにも安すぎる（カラット当たり単価が5〜6円）と数々の疑問は残りますが、やはり合成オパールであろうと思われます。
　

　While searching for synthetic opal informations, I encountered a net auction page, selling synthetic opal jewelery. They terribly resembles hydrophane blue opals from Opal Butte, Oregon and rare Shigar Valley, Pakistan. I thought these items, however, plastic opal immitation, because prices were as cheap as around US$10 per piece and the dealer handles suspicious items such as rosaries of charm for luck, made of quartz, tiger eye etc. etc. and explained this synthetic opal as natural one !!
　Few month lator, I encountered again the same page and found these opal jeweleries unsold.
In Japanese jewelery market, consumers do not appreciate synthetic materials at all, what ever their qualities and prices.
　In order to study so-called "synthetic opal", I could successfully bid them off at the lowest price.
Except colorless plastic sphere, attached to a rosary, all other so-called synthetic opals were found to be extremely heavy and strange sense of touch, which are not plastic nor glass. Then I measured specific gravity and refractive index and made a comparison chart with possible similar looking materials listed in the following chart. Then checked the Mohs hardness, scratching 1st with gypsum (2) then to calcite(3), fluorite(4), apatite(5), finally to feldspar(6) and found this material has Mohs hardness of over 6. Is it a proof that this item is really a synthetic opal ? I am not confident yet, due to too high density of 2.375-2.570 and too cheap price of 5 to 6 cent per carat.
　However, great possibly, this material seems to be a genuine synthetic opal.

オパールセントガラスと正体判明　！　（This is reavealed to be Opalscent Glass !）

　読者の方から、これはオパールセント･ガラスと呼ばれるガラスの一種であるとのご指摘をいただきました。中国のビーズ加工業者が扱っているとのことです。
　燐や弗素を混入したガラス内部に微細な結晶化が起こり、それによる光の散乱でオパールのような効果がみられるものです。
　オパールセント・ガラスは17世紀頃からヨーロッパで作られていたようです。
　アール･デコ時代のラリックやティファニーのステンド・グラス等、骨董品によく見かけます。
　ハイドロフェーン･オパールはラリックのオパールセント・ガラスガラス製品にそっくりという印象を抱いていましたが、それと気づかなかったのは全く迂闊と言うしかありません。
