March 2009 : ヒマラヤのトルマリン（Himalayan tourmalines）

　ヒマラヤとそれに連なるカラコルムとヒンドゥークシュ山脈は数千万年間に起こり、現在も進行中の造山運動によって形成されました。これに伴って無数のペグマタイト鉱床や山岳性の熱水鉱床、スカルン鉱床等が生成され、世界で有数の宝石産地となっています。
　紀元前から採掘されてきたラピス･ラズリや、大きく美しいクンツァイトとアクアマリン、量は少ないもののいずれも最上質のルビー、スピネル、エメラルド、ピンク･トパーズ、さらに19世紀末に発見され20年足らずの短期間に掘りつくされた最も美しいカシミールのサファイア等々列挙に事欠きません。
　ところがペグマタイト鉱脈には普通に見られる筈のトルマリンは、黒いショールや標本級の多彩な色合いの結晶こそ採れますが、宝石としてカットされたルースは稀にしか見られません。
　今回新たに加わったのは標本級ではありますが、比較的稀にしか見られないヒマラヤ産のトルマリン･ルースです。
産地はパキスタンとアフガニスタンと明記してあります。
　が、アフガニスタン各地の宝石の多くがパキスタンのペシャワル経由で市場に流通するため、一箇所からのみ採れるラピスラズリとは異なり、広範な産地で採れるトルマリンの正確な産地の特定は困難です。

　The Himalaya and their westward extension into the Karakoram and Hindu Kush, formed with ongoing tectonic movement formed numerous pegmatites, alpine type hydrothermal veins and scarn veins, where varieties of world-famous gemstones are discovered ; lapis-lazuli, spodumen, beryl, ruby and sapphire, spine, topaz etc., etc.
　However, faceted tourmaline from these area is rarely seen, except spectacular crystal spesimens and schorls. The newly acuired stones are from these areas. Although localities were described, it is not certain to identify the exact localities, because most of Afghan gemstones are distributed through Peshawar, Pakistan

パキスタンのトルマリン（Pakistan tourmaline）

		パキスタンには無数のペグマタイト鉱脈があり、当然トルマリンを産します。が大半は黒いショールで、宝石質のエルバイトの産地となると数えるほどしかありません　：　最北部、Skardu地方，インダス河上流沿いのStak Nala, Sabsar, Hoh のエルバイトと、Asad Kashmir地方, Donga Narのエルバイト、同じく Astor　のピンクのトルマリンくらいしか思い当たりません。 　それも結晶標本級が大半です。見映えのしない緑柱石のような色合いの6.15ctの石は、冒頭で説明したように本当はアフガニスタン産かもしれません。 　Among numerous pegmatite veins in Pakistan, a few produces gemmy elbaite ; Skardu : Stak Nara, Sabsar and Shengus, Asad Kashmir : Donga Nar and Astor. Most of them are crystal specimen class and not facetable. 　Beryl-like green 6.15ct faceted tourmaline might be from Afghanistan.

アフガニスタンのトルマリン (Afghan tourmaline)

			アフガニスタンからはアメリカのサン・ディエゴ産と見分けがつかないほど良く似たピンクや、パステル･カラーの青や緑、さらに素晴らしいインディゴ･ブルーやエメラルド色のトルマリンを産します。 　大きく美しい結晶が採れますが、大半は透明度が低いため結晶標本です。 　濃い青やエメラルド･グリーンの透明な部分はカットされ、宝飾品に使われますが、ほぼ全てのトルマリンの宝飾品は原産地が明記されることはありません。 　したがってアフガニスタン産トルマリンのルースは滅多なことでは市場に姿を現しません。 　写真の淡黄褐色の石はトルマリンとしてはありふれた色ですが、敢えてアフガニスタン産と明記してあるからには、それを信じるのみ。この産地のものは実は初めて入手しました。

Afghan tourmalines resemble that of San Diego ones for their pastel color pink, indigo blue and emerald green, as well as their well terminated forms, ideal as outstanding crystal specimens for lack of transparency as gemstone purpose. Exceptionaly transparent stones are cut for jewelry. Since almost all tourmalines are handled without caring their locality origines, we have few chance to see facegted Afghan tourmalines in the market. These two tourmalines are rare examples with clear definition as Afghan origine, although they are common pale brownish-yellow and not Afghan-like pastel color.
